After teaching UX night school, and being closely involved in local boot camps and curriculum, I was floored by the sheer amount of ground covered, specifically in the breadth of tools and techniques taught. Just in the Discovery & Research phases, we cover stakeholder interviews, user interviews, qualitative analysis, surveys, usability tests, card sorts, contextual inquiry, focus groups, personas, site maps, users flows, and on and on and on. It’s really easy to get lost in understanding the value of all these techniques especially when so many of them are so similar.
The analogy I want you to remember is that all of these techniques are tools in your UX Design toolbox. With any new tool, focus on understanding how to use it and the value it delivers. From there you’ll know when its appropriate to pull out which tool for the job.
